Mastaka Taketsuru was born into a sake brewing family near Hiroshima and was sent to Scotland at a young age to learn about whisky production. 

He arrived in Scotland in 1918 shortly after the end of World War I and worked as an apprentice at various distilleries in Scotland (including Londmorn and Hazelburn) whilst studying for a chemistry degree at Glasgow University.

Returning to Japan in 1920 with his Scottish wife Rita, he is widely credited with bringing the art of distilling whisky to Japan having established Yamazaki distillery near Kyoto in 1923 before leaving to start Yoichi in 1934.

Named after the man himself, we have here an all malt blend from Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries aged for a minimum of 17 years.
