1985 Macallan 40 Year Old Single Cask Finn Thomson Generations II

The second chapter in the Generations series by independent bottler Finn Thomson following the inaugural release in 2024 of a 40 year old Port Ellen.

Presented in a solid Scottish oak cabinet that has been charred on the exterior and shaped into nine circles that honour the nine generations of the Thomson family.

The mid-1980s was a difficult time for the Scotch whisky industry as consumer demand waned, largely in favour of brandy. Many distilleries were simply closed and those that remained open operated at a reduced capacity - it follows that the supply of Scotch still in cask from this era rather scarce.

'Rare whisky' is itself an overused phrase today but given its age and the stunningly low outturn, in this case it is quite an appropriate and justified descriptor.
